Education
At the YMCA, learning and growth happen at every age. Our education programs help youth and adults build practical skills, gain confidence, prepare for new opportunities, and make a difference in their community. From CPR, First Aid, lifeguarding and swim instruction to babysitting, teen workforce development and other skill-building courses, the Y offers opportunities to learn, grow and be prepared for what’s next.
Teen Workforce Development
The Y, in partnership with Recruit Hippo and local employers, is offering a four-week Teen Workforce Development program for ages 14–18. Learn who’s hiring locally, what employers look for, and how to apply, interview, and succeed in the workplace.

Swim Instructor Course
Interested in becoming a YMCA swim instructor?
Join our upcoming Swim Instructor Certification Course at the YMCA of Douglas County.
Course Dates

Saturday, October 24: 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Swim test, CPR, First Aid, AED and Oxygen -
Saturday, November 7: 11:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

Friday, November 13: 5:30–7:30 p.m.

Saturday, November 14: 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Sunday, November 15: 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Requirements

Must be age 16 or older

Must be able to swim 25 yards of:

Front crawl

Backstroke

Breaststroke

Butterfly

Sidestroke

$35 online course fee
Course costs may be reimbursed after 90 days of employment as a regularly scheduled swim instructor at the YMCA of Douglas County.

Lifeguard Class
Get certified to become a lifeguard! Participants must complete a swim test before attending the course and must attend all scheduled classes to receive certification.
Course Dates
Participants must attend all four classes for certification.

Saturday, December 19: 10:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Sunday, December 20: 12:00–5:30 p.m.

Monday, December 21: 10:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Tuesday, December 22: 10:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
Requirements
-
Must be age 15 or older
-
Complete a 200-yard swim using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both
-
Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only

Complete the timed swim test in 1 minute, 40 seconds, including:

Swim 20 yards
-
Dive to 7 feet and retrieve a 10-pound brick
-
Swim 20 yards with the brick
-
The swim test will be held: Friday, December 11 at 3:00 p.m.
You must register for the swim test before attending class. If you cannot attend the scheduled swim test, contact the YMCA to arrange an appointment before the first day of class.
